Perhaps the most effective method for utilizing your safelist is to regularly offer discounts. Depending on what you sell or what services you provide this may or may not be feasible. Companies with small customer lists selling complex services or products may not benefit from this method. Companies with large customer lists like Vistaprint or PSPrint use this method all the time to maintain interest in their products from potential customers.
If you’ve ever bought products from these companies then you know what I’m talking about. These are highly welcome emails because you know the discounts will be good.
Tell A Story – Safelist Promotional Method #2
When offering discounts is not something you can do profitably then the next best way to maximize the use of your safelist is to update your list when industry or company news gets published on your website.
Every good blog website has an option to subscribe to a regular newsletter with new stories are published. Why shouldn’t your website have this as well? If you are making great strides to publish good blog content on your website then offering a regular newsletter to your safelist could be a good idea.
While the blog content you publish may not make you money directly, the interest you maintain in your brand could help you down the road.
Give Company Updates/Launch New Products – Safelist Promotional Method #3
You put lots of effort into improving your company and your offerings so why not tell your safelist about it?
This method is meant to maintain interest in your company. People will appreciate there is a real human being at work behind the scenes and directly telling them this could help your brand image.
Company updates could include changes in management, a new office, even a new paint job. If there is really nothing else to tell your safelist about then this method is better than letting that precious group of emails collect dust.
How Do You Create A Safelist?
Creating a safelist could be as simple as downloading and activating a free plugin on your wordpress site. There are many free plugins that collect emails well and the paid ones are not always better.
If you run a brick and mortar business then collecting emails in person is a great idea. Asking someone for their email address is alot easier in person than through a popup or unnoticed widget on your website.
I would not recommend buying safelists from sketchy companies online or using your customer data in ways they did not explicitly give you consent to use it for. This will not be effective and will make your brand look unattractive and desperate.
You may have noticed that these methods are all bent towards improving brand awareness and likability. This was no mistake. A safelist is really only good for maintaining interest. If you obtain your safelist through illicit methods you could get yourself in trouble and end up doing more harm than good. I would not recommend using these methods for safelists obtained without the users explicit consent.
